Birchwood First Responders
L.I.V.E.S
LIVES FIRST RESPONDERS
are community volunteers who go out to victims of heart attack or suspected heart attack,
breathing difficulties, choking and collapse. If cardiac arrest occurs, a patient’s chance of survival drops
by 10% for every minute that goes by. After 8 minutes the chance of survival drops to 20%.
First Responders cover a 6 minute area enabling them to get to a patient within the 8 minute window following
despatch by ambulance control. They are trained in Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
Nationally, the overall chance of survival from cardiac arrest is 5%. Where there is a First Responder Scheme in place, this goes up to 35%.
L.I.V.E.S now has 80 First Responder schemes up and running in Lincolnshire and a further 13 who are trying to get more funding and volunteers in order to “Go Live”.
Almost anyone can become a First Responder so long as you are:-
• Over 18.
• Fit enough to carry out BLS and CPR.
• Have a clean driving license if able to drive, or someone who can transport you if not.
• Have a clean police record.
No previous experience is required, as training will be given.
If you live in the Birchwood/Doddington Park or Hartsholme area of Lincoln and can spare a few hours a week please get in touch, either directly or through L.I.V.E.S HQ.
BIRCHWOOD FIRST RESPONDERS
are fairly typical of groups across the county and consists of people from a wide range of backgrounds fulfilling various roles such as Co-ordinator, Secretary,
Treasurer and Trainer. We hold meetings monthly to ensure smooth day-to-day running of the group, we organise all of our own fundraising and publicity as well as hold monthly
training sessions to ensure our skills are up to date and well practiced.
